North East Wedding Photography Timeline

Every wedding is unique, but these are the classic moments that every UK wedding photographer would typically capture throughout the day.

A nervous groom gives their speech at the wedding breakfast surrounded by the bride and guests

In the past, speeches have taken places after the meal although its much more common to have them before now (to allow the speakers to relax and enjoy their meal). There are always some classic moments to photograph during the wedding speeches - whether its the groom's first words as a married man, the infamous best man's speech or a touching speech from the father of the bride.

Bride and groom cut the cake at their Crathorne Hall wedding

Cutting The Cake

The Cutting of the Cake is one of the classic wedding photographs. This normally takes place as the evening reception is about to start right before the first dance. It's the perfect time for the professional photographer and guests to get a photo of the couple together. These days you are just as likely to see a wedding cake made of cheese as a traditional sponge cake with white icing.

First dance by the Bride and Groom

First Dance

Some couples love the first dance and some hate it! It's become common for couples to practice their dance and I've even seen choreographed routine involving the bridesmaids and groomsmen. Whatever approach you want to take it's the perfect photo opportunity before your guests join you on the dance floor. You can now start to let your hair down and party as a newlyweds.

Evening wedding reception at a North East wedding venue

Evening Reception

The evening reception goes on into the small hours accompanied by a wedding band or DJ. The bar is open and some weddings also have an informal evening buffet to keep guests well fed and watered. Its your choice whether you choose a full band of professional musicians, pop classics, Jazz music or even a Scottish Ceilidh for your wedding reception music. Enjoy your evening!

Bridal getting her veil on during bridal preparations

Wedding Preparations

The start of the wedding day for every bride and groom. Some couples are quite nervous on the day whilst some are very relaxed. Everyone is different. This part of the wedding usually includes some really special moments such as the revealing the dress, photographing the rings, the wedding dress and shows and photos with the bride & bridesmaids and groom & groomsmen.

Proud father gives her daughter away at a North East Wedding in Crathorne Hall

Wedding Ceremony

There's a big build up to the wedding ceremony and months (or years) of planning. Whether you're having the ceremony in a church, registry office or licensed venue there are so many classic photos to capture. These include walking down the aisle, the first look, wedding vows, exchanging the rings, the first kiss, signing the register and walking down the aisle now you are officially married.

Groom talking with guests after getting married at Crathorne Hall

Drinks Reception

After the wedding ceremony, drinks and canapés are traditionally served. This is a chance to relax and see your guests as a newly married couple. Shortly after is the ideal time to get some formal family photographs done - normally outside the venue (if the North East weather permits of course!). This is also a change to do the family formal group photographs and some portraits of you both.

Wedding Breakfast

The Wedding Breakfast is your formal meal after the ceremony. This is definitely and chance to enjoy yourself and indulge in the food and drink your wedding venue has laid on for your special day. The best thing is that you get to choose everything that's on the menu! I take photos of your arrival and being seated by the wedding host at the top table which is still a popular tradition.

North East England Wedding Photographers

North East England has a population of 2.7 million people covers over 3,300 square miles and includes the counties of Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, County Durham and Cleveland (part of North Yorkshire). There are three cities which are Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Durham and Sunderland as well as highly populated areas like Middlesbrough, Gateshead and Darlington. The North East is a historic part of the British Isles featuring many castles, abbeys and monuments but is also famous for its industry including shipbuilding, steelmaking and chemical engineering on Teesside and Tyneside. The North East weather is not always ideal for weddings with a wet and windy climate at many times of the year! However, the locations and scenery make it one of the best places in the UK for wedding photography. There are hundreds of wedding venues to choose from in the region whether you are looking for a traditional country house hotel, a trendy barn conversion or something more adventurous like an outdoor wedding ceremony and Tipi wedding reception afterwards. The following sections provide my guide to the leading wedding venues in the North East.
